What Is A Midwife?
During your pregnancy, you may choose to work with a midwife. A certified nurse midwife, (CNM) or certified midwife, (CM) are licensed midwives with a Master's degree in Midwifery, and have received their graduate level education in programs accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME). Additionally, CNM's also have a Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Both are advanced-practice providers (post-baccalaureate) who specialize in women's reproductive health and childbirth. Licensed Midwives (CNM's and CM's) must pass a national certification exam from the American Midwifery Certification Board and hold a state license to practice. Not only do midwives attend to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and post-partum, they also are responsible for preventive women's health maintenance, such as annual exams, pap smears, STI screens and other health screenings, family planning and gynecologic needs.
The main difference between doctors and midwives is that midwives are trained to manage and support people who are having normal, uncomplicated, low-risk pregnancies. Midwives are also skilled in handling emergencies that arise during childbirth. However, midwives do not perform c-sections (cesarean births). Doctors (obstetricians/gynecologists) are trained to handle any complications and are skilled in managing high-risk pregnancies. If there are any complications with your pregnancy, or if you develop any while you are pregnant and under the care of a midwife, your care will be referred to or have collaborative care with a doctor at Central Park South Obstetrics & Gynecology Associates.
Midwives work with families throughout each and every stage of their pregnancy, including postpartum care. Referrals are continuously made for holistic approaches and solutions that might be suggested for our patients, such as chiropractic care, acupuncturists, doulas, and other alternative therapies. If you are looking for a more personal experience during your pregnancy, a midwife may be the right option for you. Central Park South Obstetrics & Gynecology Associates has midwives on staff who can work with you from pre-pregnancy or the time that you become pregnant, throughout the course of your pregnancy and after, helping to work towards a joyful and healthy transition into motherhood.
Why Choose a Midwife?Choosing a midwife for your pregnancy offers a wide array of benefits. Midwives provide both physical and emotional support through each step of pregnancy and form a more personal connection. They spend more face-to-face time with you throughout entire process from preconception to postpartum. A midwife can be especially helpful for first-time mothers, providing the support to ease any stress or anxiety during or after the pregnancy, including newborn care and breastfeeding.
What is the Difference Between a Traditional OB/GYN and a Midwife?A common misconception is that midwives do not have the same education and training as a traditional OB/GYN provider, but the truth is that most midwives are Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNM) who are licensed healthcare practitioners who have extensive training first becoming a nurse and then completing a graduate program in midwifery. Both OB/GYNs and Midwives are fully trained to deliver your baby and can provide gynecological services, family planning, pre-conceptual care, delivery, and postpartum care. The main difference between traditional OB/GYN care and midwifery is that a traditional OB/GYN is better suited for high-risk pregnancies while a midwife is an excellent choice for women with low-risk pregnancies who want a more personal connection and approach.
